Mario Dedivanovic Interview (from The Wedding Audiocast)

I was browsing Mario's blog awhile back and saw this interview with The Wedding Planner Audiocast. Wait, let me back it up. Mario is Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian's makeup artist. He's amazing and he seems like a really cool guy as well. So, when I saw the interview on his blog I decided to listen thinking I might catch some pro tips or insight into makeup that would be useful. The interview is about 20 minutes, I think, and it was good. I didn't learn anything mind-blowing but there were a few gems in there.

What's in your makeup folder?

What do you do with images that inspire you? When you flip through a magazine or watch a YouTube video and see a look that you love, what do you do with it? When someone posts a FOTD do you save the pics to your computer? I do - all the time. The image to the right happens to be one of them. When something jumps out at me and I want to recreate it or just commit it to memory to draw from it later I save it. I have a "makeup" folder on my hard drive that is full of these images. There have to be around 300 pictures, all of which were found on blogs, stills I captured from YT videos, FOTD posts people have done, Google image results and many other things. I'm constantly adding to them and like to browse them when I'm bored or just in a makeup rut.

About Face: Ruby Slippers Tutorial

Simple enough. Take the classic pinup look and kick it up a notch (thanks Emeril!) with red glitter on the lips. I really wanted the eyes to be neutral but to pop a bit more. There's always next time.

Project: Blue Black Hair

There is a Polish girl that works at the Sally beauty supply I frequent. She has a tan that's deepened her skin tone to only a few shades lighter than mine. LOL. But what catches my attention every time is her hair. She has a really cute razor cut bob that is JET BLACK. It's the kind of black that you can tell is from a bottle and not her scalp. I love it! I think the contrast between the tan skin and deep black looks amazing. I see women from time to time with hair like this and for the last 2 years or so I have been soooo tempted to dye my hair so that I can get that color.

Black Hair & Ruby Lips

I have two posts coming up this week, both of which feature videos and both of which I'm in the process of editing:
  1. I dyed my hair black. If you follow me on twitter or notice my updates in the sidebar, you'll know I dyed my hair. My hair is naturally dark brown but I've been thinking about dying if for a couple years now. I used a demi-permanent color which will gradually rinse out over the next 2 months. The video shows what I used, how I applied it and the results.

  2. I did a makeup tutorial with the classic neutral eye & red lip BUT I used red glitter on top of the red lipstick. Pretty cool. I also added a little gold to the center of the lips just to add something a little different.
Sooooo....here are a couple pics, sneak peeks if you will.

Because I Love It: Amber Rose Edition

PhotobucketAmber Rose = Hot! Like really hot.

I noticed her when she started dating Kanye West. I loved that she was rocking a bleached buzz cut (essentially) when most other women are so hair obsessed that they're trying to grow hair down their backs. I've seen her color her hair blue. I've seen her with bright blue lipstick. I've seen her in leotards & leather jackets, leggings & evening gowns. She stands out because she takes risks with fashion & beauty. There is nothing more refreshing & intriguing than someone who isn't afraid to be different. Actually, I think she revels in it. I love it and because of it I love Amber Rose.

Hourglass Cosmetics Friends & Family Sale

Here is the scoop on the Hourglass Cosmetics Friends & Family sale. Hourglass is a brand I heard of awhile ago. I honestly can't remember my first introduction but I was very curious about what I heard. I have samples of each of the primers but haven't gotten around to trying them. I really need to get to it because I have read rave reviews of them. The brand has a higher price point than MAC, for instance, but they seem kind of luxe and hopefully well worth the extra cost. So, if you are curious about the brand or have been waiting for an opportunity to try it now is your chance.

Get The Look - Rihanna

Ok. You have heard me mention that I love Rihanna. If you read my blog for any length of time you can expect to see a lot of Rihanna love here. So, when I saw this a few weeks ago I thought it was the perfect thing to share. Originally, I just tweeted about it but I thought I could do better than that! I wanted to share it here with you guys. This is a segment from It's on with Alexa Chung. Basically, they took a young lady who was a huge fan of Rihanna's style and transformed her, bringing out her inner Rihanna. With the help of a makeup artist, hair stylist and wardrobe stylist Rihanna's look was analyzed and recreated, faux hawk and all!

Scott Barnes

Scott Barnes. Is the name familiar? If you are really into makeup then either his name or his work are very familiar to you. He is the man responsible for the infamous JLo "glow" that everyone was trying to perfect a few years ago. But, aside from Jennifer he has worked on Nia Long, Lucy Liu, Brandy, Kimora Lee Simmons, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Celine Dion, Mariska Hargitay among many many others. He really is fantastic at what he does. I would encourage you to check him out. There are several ways to see what he's up to, browse his portfolio or just say hello:

What the heck happened to the 3rd Artist Summit Post

For those of you who have been reading my Artist Summit posts, you know that I promised a 3rd installment. If you also follow me on Twitter you may have read that Blogger punked my ass and as I finished up a 2 hour long session on that post, it wiped out everything. So, I am back to square one. I will get it up for you guys as well as a video summary of the summit and some pics of my hauls from the summit.

FOTD: Taste The Rainbow

This post started out as a trial run to see if I could duplicate this MAC Halloween look. It soon just morphed into my own design and I just kind of went with it to see what I could do. I liked how it turned out. It took HOURS and it's the first time I have done anything like it so I was excited. It's also my second time covering my brow - still need to work on it a bit. :)

I was pretty impressed. I have a mini post coming on them...but in the meantime, you can check them out yourself if you are in or near the Beverly Hills or New York area.

The Artist Summit Chicago: Rewind - Day 2

Day 2 started at 12:30PM for me. At the blogger's preview the night before, Felicia mentioned that she was heading a panel on beauty and blogging and that I should check it out. So, this is where my day began. Felicia was there representing her blog, This That Beauty, along with Lianne Farbes from The Makeup Girl and Christina Farrell from The Makeup Blogger lead a panel to discuss the how they got into the beauty blogging business, the things they have learned along the way and how we can take our blogs to the next level. There were about 30 attendees and the panel lasted about an hour. Again, I took a ton of notes and here are the highlights:

Halloween 2009: Edward Scissorhands & Ganguro

Halloween might just be my favorite time of year! I love the makeup (obviously). I love dressing up. I love pretending. I love the costumes from young and old. I love the candy and the fun. So, for the next two weeks as we count down to the big day, everyday I am going to post two (2) Halloween looks that I enjoy. Maybe you'll be inspired or maybe just entertained. Enjoy!

The Artist Summit Chicago: Rewind - Day 1

I am finally sharing my experience at The Artist Summit Chicago with you guys. I decided to do a post today and for the next 2 days, each one being a week to the day later, of the 3 day event. Does that make sense? It will. Enjoy The Artist Summit Chicago: Rewind.

Day 1 of The Dream:

My experience with The Artist Summit started at 5PM on Saturday, October 10, 2009. I was excited all day leading up to it thinking about what I was going to wear and I how I was going to do my hair and my makeup. Once I got that all squared away, I jumped on the bus and 45 minutes later I was...

The Artist Summit - Chicago

I have sooooooo much to share with you guys. I am back from day 2 of the Artist Summit and I am exhausted. One more day and it will be done and hopefully I can really sit down and transcribe all my notes for you. I got a chance to talk to Katie Pellegrino, makeup artist for Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics about the brand, how it started, and the origin of their interesting product names. I spoke with MAC Senior Artist Romero Jennings about his approach to artistry and his makeup forecast for the upcoming season. A group of us got a guided tour from James Vincent & Felicia Walker Benson of the Powder Group as they introduced the vendors at the show and shared some of their favorite products. I sat in a panel discussion with Felicia, Lianne Farbes of The Makeup Girl, and Christina Farrell of The Makeup Blogger as they discussed blogging and the beauty industry. There is so much more but just to give you some idea I have a few pictures for you. Enjoy!

MAC - Halloween

It's that time of year! Halloween is 22 days away and MAC has put up Halloween looks on their Facebook and YouTube pages. Every year MAC artists from around the world submit their most creative Halloween looks in hopes of being featured on the maccosmetics.com website. This year, the top 21 looks made it on Facebook, the top 5 on the YT video. I'm assuming that these will eventually make their way onto the actual MAC website as well. This year is especially exciting for me because one of the MAC artists that I have know for years made the cut! Her look is a Roy Lichtenstein inspired take on his famous pop culture paintings. MAC has titled it, "She Goes Pop!"

In past years, there seemed to be some duds and some standouts but this year I am really impressed by the number of great looks. I think there is something for everyone and every skill level. They seem to be broken into general categories - black & white, animals, spooky characters, and fanatsy. Below is the video featuring the top 5 looks re-created by MAC Senior Artists Bianca Alexander, Luc Bouchard, Keri Blair, Sandy Joseph and Chantel Miller. Enjoy!
