I used to have a love affair with Angelina Jolie. I thought she was beautiful, sexy and fascinating. Well...that's kind of over. But, once in awhile she reminds me why I used to love her. I thought she looked beautiful at The Gold Globes a couple of weeks ago. The hair, the dress and the makeup were clean and simple but bold at the same time. A lot of people don't agree with matching makeup to clothing but I like it when it's done well - and here I think that it was. The red lip complements the red handbag as well as the red accent on the dress. I browsed a couple of sites to find good pics. Thanks and credit to Just Jared and Angelina Jolie Place.

I've wanted to share this with you guys FOREVER! Ok, here's the story: the very first LORAC product I purchased was a matte brown eyeshadow from a department store about 10 years ago. The pigmentation and texture were okay but nothing mind blowing. I used it on occasion but it wasn't a favorite so after some time I tossed it. Well, as things go my indifference toward the product generated an indifference toward the brand and I never made another purchase. Fast forward a few years and I became curious about the brand again. Then I saw this kit. What sold it for me was the value. You get four (4) FULL SIZE products and a double-ended brush for $36. The price of a single LORAC eyeshadow trio, similar to the one included in this set, is $26. You can purchase the kit at Ulta and Sephora locations as well as Ulta.com and Sephora.com. I highly recommend it and it's a great way to try several products from the line for the first time. Now, I'm going to go through the different elements in the kit and give you my opinions.

Instructional Guide

The instructional guide provides information about each of the products in the kit as well as tips on using them. It also has removable clings that attach to your mirror. Each cling provides step-by-step instruction on completing one of three (3) eyeshadow applications - "Natural Eye", "Sexy Cay Eye" and "Signature Smokey Eye". I have to be honest and say that I don't really use the instructional guide or the brush. I think the guide is actually very good. The instructions are clear and the pictures are great. I just tend to do my own thing.

Double Ended Blending/ Smudging Brush

Simply put: this brush is horrible. It feels like goat hair but it's a poor quality brush that is scratchy and lacks density. I like the shape of the blending side because it reminds me of the MAC 217, which is a phenomenal blending brush. But, it's nowhere near as great as the 217. The smudging side is way too large, long and fluffy to effectively smudge anything. It reminds me of a thinner version on the MAC 222, another good blending brush.

Front of the Line PRO Eyeliner

I love the Front of the Line PRO Eyeliner. I like liquid eyeliner, Boot Black by MAC and L'Oreal Lineur Intense being previous favorites. But, I wanted to try an eyeliner pen and I really do love this one. I suggest it to everyone I know and I have purchased two (2) backups. The color is rich, it's waterproof and it has a brush tip whereas most pens I've seen have a felt tip. I find that felt tips clog easily over time and brushes don't. The tip on this pen is also very fine but the brush is flexible. This means that you can get a very sharp, fine line with light pressure or apply a bit more pressure and change the angle and get a thicker, fuller line. It wears well throughout the day without smudging and it removes easily with makeup remover or a good makeup wipe.

Behind the Scenes Eye Primer

The texture of the Behind the Scenes Eye Primer looks and feels pretty much like your standard eye primer. It's a translucent, milky beige cream that blends easily and dries invisible. It creates a smooth base so that shadows/pigments apply more smoothly and with more impact. I found that this performs better for me than a lot of the other primers I've tried. Why? I can't be sure. But, I have gotten easily eight (8) plus hours of wear without creasing. It's also a better value. Like most high end primers it costs around $20. But, at 0.53 oz, each tube of the LORAC primer surpasses the value of the others, namely Urban Decay Primer Potion (0.37 oz), Too Faced Shadow Insurance (0.35 oz), and NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (0.26 oz ).

Starry-Eyed Baked Eye Shadow Trio in Movie Star

The Starry-Eyed Baked Eye Shadow Trio is a great baked eyeshadow. It has a smooth texture - it's not too shimmery or sparkly. The pigmentation seems sheer at first but it's easily buildable. Depending on your application (applied directly to the skin, over a primer, or wet) you can easily get three (3) different levels of intensity. I love the bronze shade in particular. I apply the eye primer and then sweep shadow over the lid. It's the perfect nothing, but something shadow. It looks effortless but pretty.

Special Effects Mascara in Black

Now, other than the brush this was the only other disappointing product in the kit. It isn't horrible but it doesn't perform as I expected. The Special Effects Mascara is a dual end product with a primer at one end, which is Step 1, and a mascara at the other end, which is Step 2. I didn't find the primer or mascara to be amazing and certainly nothing worthy of the "special effects" title. The primer made it more difficult to apply the mascara, actually. It made my lashes rigid and spikey which resulted in pitiful spider lashes when I coated them with the mascara. The mascara itself didn't give amazing volume or length and is a pretty basic formula. The brush on both is a thin rubberized material and the formula on both the mascara and the primer is middle of the road - not too liquid, not too thick. It's also not a formula that you can layer because it clumps very easily. I use the mascara by itself on days when I just want a natural look with a little definition.

So, that's everything. Like I said, I would highly recommend it. The price is unbelievable and you'll find that a lot of LORAC kits tend to be a great price for the value of the product that you get in them. I think I'll do a separate post to show you my version of the three looks featured in the instructional guide. So, stay tuned for that. :)

I can't believe I didn't post this! I did two Halloween makeup tutorials on my YouTube page. One I called Bubblegum Disco and the other was my take on Catwoman. I LOVED the Bubblegum disco look but the wig just ruined it. Next time I need to spend a little more and get a GOOD afro wig. Oh well.

This Spring Ja'Maal Buster held a truck show which traveled throughout the country appearing at several Barney's New York locations. One of his final stops brought him to Chicago. I got a chance to meet Ja'Maal, discuss his lash line and learn a little bit about his collaboration with Barney's and what brought him to this point in his career.

First, let me start with a little background on Ja'Maal. He started at a salon in Dallas, Texas offering lash extensions. He gained popularity which led him to Atlanta and eventually Los Angeles where he started his own couture eyelash company. Ja'Maal, "The Eyelash Guru To The Stars", explained that he himself created the concept, design, and packaging behind the line. It's a detail which distinguishes him from his competitors. He also designed each lash personally to ensure that they are lightweight with a flexible band. He intended for the everyday woman to feel comfortable applying the lashes herself at home as opposed to needing assistance from a makeup artist. I think the idea is to make women feel special. To offer a piece of the service he provides to his celebrity clientele. To make that experience attainable but affordable and convenient. He even offers an eyelash tool which helps to place the lash properly.

I asked Ja"Maal how the partnership with Barney's came about. Up until this point the lashes were only available through his website. Review: Bdellium Tools

This is going to be a MEGA post, but please hang in there. There's a lot of valuable info. I have 13 brushes to share with you including details about my experiences with them as well as recommended uses for them. So, let's begin. Let me start by sharing my introduction to Bdellium Tools. Actually, no. Let me start with the name. Bdellium is NOT pronounced BEE-Dellium. Don't believe me? Check their site. The "B" is silent so as much as you may be tempted to do not say BEE-Dellium. Now that I have gotten that off my chest, onto my introduction to the line. Nes, from the blog Lyrically Ness, tweeted about her love for the brushes and how she planned to purchase more. I had never heard of Bdellium but she sparked my interest. I have a good core collection of brushes so as I browsed the Bdellium website I decided to look for brushes which would augment my collection - brushes unlike any I already had. The problem is that as I searched through Google and YouTube for blog and video reviews I didn't find info on any of the brushes that I wanted. So, I ordered blind. The purchase links on the Bdellium site re-direct you to Amazon where you actually place your order. The brushes arrived less than a week later via USPS. Bdellium was also an exhibitor at America's Beauty Show so I picked up a few brushes when I attended. At first I thought that I was just excited to try something new but in all honesty even now, three months later, I reach for these brushes more than any others.

All the brushes that I am going to share with you are from the Studio line. But Bdellium actually carries four different lines:

Maestro Line - The professional-grade line. Nickel plated brass ferrules with black lacquered handles. The bristles are natural, synthetic or combination of both.
Studio Line - The consumer-grade line. The brush heads are identical to the Maestro line. Anodized aluminum ferrules with yellow lacquered handles. The bristles are natural, synthetic or combination of both.
Travel Line - Travel-friendly. Identical to the studio line however the handles are shorter.
Green Bambu Line - The eco-friendly line. Sustainable bamboo green lacquered handles. 100 % animal and cruelty free hypoallergenic synthetic bristles.

A Couple of Things to Note

Each brush in the Maestro, Studio and Travel lines is treated with an anti-bacterial agent. This anti-bacterial agent helps guard against bacteria (specifically E.coli or S.aureus), fungus and mold. The Green Bambu line is NOT treated with the antibacterial agent in an effort to keep them eco-friendly.

Also worth noting is that ALL Bdellium brushes are cruelty free. The natural bristles used come from goat or pony hair. Bdellium never uses squirrel, badger, sable, etc.

I mentioned that I purchased my brushes via Amazon.com and at America's Beauty Show but Bdellium Tools is also available at Naimie's in California, naimies.com, and boozyshop.nl and cocktailcosmetics.co.uk for customers in Europe. A Couple of Things I noticed In Using the Brushes:

After three months of use, neither the lettering nor the numbering on the brushes has not rubbed off at all.

The duet fiber brushes did bleed the first 2-3 times I washed them but they never stained.

I noticed some reddish discoloration on the bristles of my #948 & #957 brushes right at the ferrule. It happened after I washed them and left them to dry and only happened on those two which seem to be made with the same type of synthetic bristles.

I specifically bought this to smudge out eyeliner and eyeshadow at the lower lashline. I saw makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic using a similar brush for this technique but realized that I didn't have a brush with a head this exact shape or size. Now, in the above picture the brush almost resembles a MAC #242 but it is completely different. The bristles aren't as rough and the brush head is shorter and more narrow. It's an excellent brush with works well for detail work on the eye. You can also easily use this to apply gel eyeliner or shadow as eyeliner.

I thought this would be a dupe for the MAC #252. It is not. This is a shader brush closer to the MAC #239. It's not as large as the #252 nor is it as firm. At first glance and touch I didn't think it was remarkable at all. However, I really like this brush. It picks up and deposits color well. It's a great go-to brush for eyeshadow application.

I purchased this because I was looking for a dupe for the MAC #217. This is almost a complete dupe. The picture above shows the brush after it was washed and dried in a Brush Guard so it's compressed but the natural shape is almost identical to the 217. It's a great brush for blending your eyeshadows or buffing liquid or cream concealer under the eyes or on other areas of the face.

For controlled lightweight application and works well with mineral pigments. This brush makes easy application on the eye crease and around the nose area.

This brush comes in two versions - a pony hair and a duet fiber hair. It was really confusing when I purchased it because I wanted the duet fiber but was sent the pony hair. I eventually got it all settled and decided to keep the pony hair because it really is almost another brush entirely because of the difference in the hair. My understanding is that this, the pony hair version, is being phased out.

I purchased this brush to buff liquid and cream concealers under the eyes. If anyone remembers the now discontinued MAC #225 this brush is similar in shape and size but it's not as dense. I found that pony hair tends to have a lot of give and isn't the best type of brush for buffing product. I did try to blend shadows in my crease as well. It was ok. It's a very large crease brush, even for someone like me who has a lot of lid space. And again, when blending the crease I find that you need a brush that is a little more stiff. I think it works really well as a face brush, though. You could even use it to highlight the top of the cheekbones.

I prefer this duet fiber version to the pony hair version. It's a sturdier brush that has more body. I found that it was the better of the two for blending the crease as well as buffing concealer under the eye. I really like this brush! I reach for it all the time. Because it's a duet fiber brush it gives you a lighter, more sheer application. It's great for the days when you just want to apply concealer or foundation in the areas you need, powder, then go.

The description says that it's a goat hair brush but I wonder if it's actually pony hair. It's very similar in density and feel to the other Bdellium pony hair brushes. This is a dupe for the MAC #109 in shape and size but the similarity ends there. The #109 is a brush that a lot of people love for contouring and highlighting the face as well as buffing cream and liquid foundations into the skin. This brush just wasn't dense enough to buff product into the skin. It collapses into the face. You can use it to sweep powder onto the skin and the brush deposits color well. I just wish that it was denser.

This is my favorite traditional-style foundation brush. I have looked for a long time for a good foundation brush. It always seems to be a Goldilocks situation. One brush is too large, another too small. Some are very stiff and some are incredibly flimsy. I felt lucky and relieved to find this. The brush head is the perfect length, width and height. It is dense enough to pick up product while being flexible enough to glide it across the skin without displacing it. One of the things that gives such a great finish is the feathered taper on the sides of the brush. You can see the texture of the brush in the picture. It's soft and applies product very evenly.

This is a dupe for the MAC #130, I think. I don't have the #130 but have seen and felt it. I think that the brush head on #130 is shorter, though. That said, this brush is awesome. I love it for cream foundation. It gives great, even coverage. The brush is dense and allows you to buff the foundation in small circles into the skin. It would also work really well for blending in cream blush for a very natural finish.

I like this brush. It's very soft. I thought it was a dupe for the E.L.F Studio Powder Brush. Honestly, they are incredibly similar but I think that this brush is a little softer. That really says something considering the softness and lush feeling of the E.L.F brush. This is an extremely dense brush but like I said it is VERY soft, not rigid or rough at all. I've used it with my Bare Minerals foundation, pressed powder and liquid foundation. It worked well with them all however I prefer different brushes for each of those individual applications.

When I saw this brush I wanted it just because. I loved the design and thought I might give it a go with liquid foundation. LOL. That was a no go. This truly is a powder brush. It is very large and has a nice density to it. Although it's not a fluffy powder brush, which is my preference, I'm still glad that I bought it. I will find a good use for it.

This is the only Bdellium brush that I have which isn't really that soft. It's kind of scratchy, actually. I was disappointed because I thought it would make a fantastic powder brush. It's got a very large, dense head and if it was softer it would feel amazing on the skin and work as a large buffing brush. I honestly don't reach for it often at all. I just took a look at Amazon and it looks like they have redesigned this brush using a different kind of hair. Hopefully, it's softer.

One of my favorite brushes and definitely my FAVORITE brush for applying foundation. I dampen the brush with water and apply liquid or cream foundation in light feathered strokes for a very natural, beautiful finish. It also works well used dry to apply very pigmented blushes like those from NARS, Rock & Republic or Kevyn Aucoin. It gives you control over the intensity of the color payoff. I would definitely recommend this brush, specifically for foundation. If you like the MAC #187 for applying liquid foundation then you will love this.

So, this is the big brother to the Bdellium #965. I thought it would also work well with foundation. It doesn't. It's way too big. But, it works well with powder. The duet fiber is great for a lightly sweeping powder over the face. Try applying your foundation with the #965 and then powder with this.

This is another brush I just had to have. It's an interesting brush because it's a blend of natural and synthetic bristles but it's not a duet fiber brush. But another interesting thing is that the shorter end of the brush is denser than the longer end. You can use the shorter end to press powder into the skin and then use the longer end to whisk away the excess. You can also use this for applying bronzer. But, it is a very large brush so it may be awkward for some to use for that purpose. And of course you can always use this brush for lightly powdering the face.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that the brushes are very well made. No crooked handles or ferrules, no excessive shedding, no chipping of the paint or crooked printing. They are lightweight without feeling flimsy or cheap. They are very impressive brushes that I think everyone should try.

Event: The Makeup Show Chicago 2011 Recap

I have been dragging my feet posting my experience at The Makeup Show Chicago. I've been in a writing rut, I suppose. But, I just realized that the show was three weeks ago so this is MORE than overdue. I'm going to start with a post from Alia, the winner of my giveaway. I asked her to contribute a post sharing her experience at the show with everyone. It was her first time attending The Makeup Show and I really wanted to hear, in her words, what she took away from it.

I had read blogs and articles about the Makeup Show in NY and LA never thinking it was possible to attend so early in my MUA pursuits. Then I learned that the show was coming to Chicago and I became determined to attend. I remembered Azia positing about the show and when I saw her contest video on YouTube I knew I had to enter. I audibly gasped when I woke up on Wednesday and saw that I had won a ticket! Woohoo, I was on my way to Chicago!

It was AWESOME! From the blogger preview that I was allowed to attend on Saturday, to meeting and hanging with fellow MUAs and people that I had admired from afar, it was all that I imagined it would be. I don’t know if it was the love of the artistry or happiness over having a show that prominent in the Midwest, but the energy was so great! Event: The Makeup Show Chicago 2011

This is a follow up to a post from August of last year. In that post I announced that The Makeup Show is coming to CHICAGO! The Makeup Show is a trade show, networking and educational opportunity for those in the cosmetic industry. The Powder Group started the show 6 years ago in New York and it has since branched out to Los Angeles and for the first time will be taking place NEXT MONTH in Chicago from June 12-13, 2011. I am BEYOND excited. I attended the show last year in New York so if you'd like to get an idea of what the show is about and see my experience check out these posts. I had a great time and it was an incredible opportunity to meet other bloggers, learn about new products and companies and attend seminars taught by some of the best makeup artists in the industry. I would HIGHLY recommend attending the show if you are a makeup artist, in cosmetology school/makeup school, a salon or spa owner, etc.

In The Know: Sears Revamps Cosmetics & Fragrance Department

I don't know where I initially read that Sears was overhauling the cosmetics and fragrance department but it looks like it's happening. I visited my local Sears and encountered a completely different department. There is bright white shelving and a kiosk for makeup demos. There was also a small register area to complete your transactions. I'm assuming there will be a dedicated beauty advisor of sort to help with your purchases. It's almost reminiscent of a mini Sephora outpost. I am very impressed.

Sears has carried random beauty products from smaller or no name companies, most of which I was unfamiliar, for some time. But now it looks like they've removed those and replaced them with more recognizable brands that we've seen at drugstores and department stores. So L'Oreal, Milani, Iman, Revlon and NYC are right alongside brands like Flori Roberts and Mineral Essence. The stores are also carrying skincare brands like Lumene, Adrien Arpel, Ahava and Dermalogica. I even spotted some nail care from Sally Hansen and Essie.

Unfortunately most of the brands didn't have testers. I hope they plan to change that. It would be great to offer customers the chance to see the products on their skin. Otherwise most of the very same products can be purchased on the next trip to the drugstore. Sears has certainly come a long way. Bravo.

In The Know: New Ben Nye Mojave Luxury Powders

Ben Nye Visage Poudre Luxury Powder in Banana, a.k.a. Ben NYE Banana powder, has been a favorite of women of color and makeup artists whose clients are women of color for a long time. It's a finely milled translucent powder favored for its slight yellow/peachy tint. The powder is perfect on darker skintones because it doesn't appear ashy or create a grey cast on the skin the way some traditional white translucent powders can.

I own Banana Powder and posted a review for it on my channel. It's a good alternative to most other translucent powders but I do wish it came in slightly darker color as well. As it turns out, Ben Nye has recently launched the "Mojave" line. The line consists of foundations, concealers and powders specially designed for women of color. Included in the line is a series of SIX new Luxury Powders:

Nutmeg

Chocolate

The powders are available at most places you find Ben Nye products sold. I've seen the whole Mojave line for sale by several online retailers. I have yet to check it out myself but as soon as I can find a retailer in my area I definitely will. Perhaps Ben Nye will have the collection at The Makeup Show.

In The Know: New Urban Decay Primer Potion Packaging

Urban Decay Primer Potion is a very, VERY popular eyeshadow primer with good reason. It really does prolong the wear of your shadows, prevent creasing and even increase the color payoff with some. However, the major issue people have had with the product is the design. The hourglass-shaped bottle makes it impossible to use the included doe foot to get all of the product. But, you think that you've used it all and toss the bottle. Well, some resourceful beauty addict found out that by slicing the bottle in half you can scoop out the remaining product. The amazing thing is that there is still A TON of product left in a bottle you would ordinarily have considered to be empty. Urban Decay promised a solution to its customers and eventually released a "re-design" which didn't amount to much more than a curved doe-foot. It was a disappointment to say the least. The doe foot still didn't help to access all of the product in the bottle.

It appears Urban Decay has FINALLY launched a true re-design. UDPP is now available in a squeeze tube and it looks like all four variations - Original, Sin, Eden and Greed are available in the new packaging. I originally spotted this on the Urban Decay Facebook page and couldn't believe it. I'm surprised this wasn't done sooner since the larger "professional size" is available in a squeeze tube. But, regardless it's finally here although, according to Temptalia, it's only currently available at Sephora.

Keri Hilson has leaked the album cover of her sophomore release, "No Boys Allowed", ahead of its scheduled December 21 release. I think it looks fantastic! Keri is hit or miss a lot of the time with me. Sometimes I LOVE her look and sometimes I really don't get where she is coming from. But, I've gotta say I love everything about this look. It's so sultry! The makeup was done by makeup artist Billy B., who never ceases to amaze me. I might do a blog post on him because he is really out of this world...but anyway....Are You Feeling This?

FOTD: All Dressed Up and Nowhere To Go

I was headed out last Saturday in the unseasonably, amazing weather but I never made it. I would show you guys my outfit to put this look in its proper perspective but I don't really do OOTD so....yeah. But it was a beautiful purple button down with white shorts.

ANYwho, this is pretty simple as looks go. I was going to wear red lipstick. I really, really wanted to wear red but I couldn't pull it off with this outfit - I don't think so anyway. And now that I think of it this could be a Beat-4-A-Buck post because 99% of this look was done using drugstore products. Oh, and I'll update this post with a face chart of the look sometime this week. Oh, oh, oh! I almost forgot! I lightened my brows. Okay, onto the pics.

The have dressed Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Christina Aguilera, Keyshia Cole, Britney Spears and so on and so on. If I, scratch that, when I make it to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week I have to see their show. This year they have teamed up with MAC&Milk to present their show. Kelly Rowland is ramping up the promotion for her upcoming third solo album. She recently shot with photographer Mike Ruiz, who I love, and here are a few pics from the session. The shoot was done for YRB Magazine and the above picture features Kelly rocking a design by The Blonds. I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Blonds. If I can ever make it to New York Fashion Week (I'm looking at 2011) that is the ONE show that I would die to see!

Kelly is rocking a very severe look here but I like it. Partially blocked brows, filled into create a virtually straight brow. Deep shadow on the lid in an almost cat-eye shape. Deep color on the lips. Contoured cheeks.

I am actually really happy to see Kelly going in a different direction. This is certainly a look we've never seen from her in either her time with Destiny's Child or her other solo efforts. I don't know if it's getting older (she's now 29) or getting new management (she dropped Matthew Knowles) but I like it and I'm excited to see what she's going to do next. So, are YOU feeling this?

My Secret to Clear Skin

I have found my cleansing HG (Holy Grail). I am always in search of the best cleanser, moisturizer, mask, etc. It's hard to find that one product that you can count on and go back to time and time again.

I have tried dozens of cleansers. Some of them were drugstore, some department store and some specialty store but few really WOWed me. I have pretty good skin but I have gone through periods where it seemed to be permanately broken out, specifically my forehead. I was so frustrated and more than desperate for anything I thought would help. Thankfully, I seem to have come out of that phase but I was still unhappy with the overall condition of my skin.

I was in CVS one day and noticed that the Boots skincare was on clearance. The line had been marked down to $3 and $4 an item so I couldn't NOT try it. Plus, I liked that it was made with botanicals so I felt it would be good for my skin. I picked up the Complexion Refining Deep Clean Mousse, a mask and a moisturizer. [NOTE: I have since seen the line at Target but the products seem to be reformulated and in new packaging.]

I was using a complexion brush by Face Secrets which I found at Sally Beauty Supply for around $2. It's a nylon brush that I use to work my cleanser into the skin. I was also using a Neutrogena cleanser at the time and it seemed to work pretty well. Well, when I ran out of my Neutrogena, I decided to try the Boots cleanser. Game changing moment! The combination of the the cleanser and the brush REALLY improved my skin. I remember just staring at my skin in the mirror. It felt so clean and smooth and it looked so even and clear. I was so excited. This dynamic duo has been fighting to keep my skin looking virtually flawless.

My breakouts are much less frequent and I can honestly say that I am happier with my skin than I have been in a long time. My ultimate goal is to even out my complexion so that I really don't need foundation at all. I think I'm well on my way. :D

Review: Rock & Republic Blush in "Kinky"

Rock and Republic is a premium denim brand made famous for its celebrity clientèle and its collaborations, namely their collection with Victoria Beckham. What a lot of people don't know is that the brand also has a line of cosmetics. It debuted in the fall of 2008 and was sold at Rock & Republic stores as well as high end department stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. It has since been pulled and can only be found at R&R stores and on their website. I think the main reason that this line didn't catch on was the price point. The blush is $40. There is a highlighting and bronzing powder duo that is $225. O_o WHOA! The line is extensive including lip gloss, pressed powder, blush, eyeshadow, tinted primer, etc. But, I think the price point - even for a luxury brand - was certainly a hurdle for them, especially in this economy. Luckily, I was able to catch a sale on HauteLook, which is an online sample sale site. The Rock & Republic cosmetics were 50% off. So, enough of that. Onto the blush!

THE HYPE

Rock & Republic describes the blushes as the following:

Smooth, silky texture
Available in three finishes: matte, shimmer and translucent
Can be used to highlight or accent

This is pretty much what I have heard from other bloggers and customers. But, I have to say that I didn't find Kinky all that silky or smooth. I found it kind of talcy, if that makes sense. It has an almost rough texture, a hard texture. As for the finish, the blush itself is not labeled, nor is the finish listed on the R&R website. So, I have no idea which finish it is supposed to be. It is a matte blush but do they consider it matte or translucent??? So, that's two strikes. The other thing that I heard a lot is that the blushes are SUPER pigmented. They supposedly rival the intensity of NARS blushes which, for many, is the resident super blush on the market. But, again, I didn't find that to be true here. With NARS blushes you get so much product and so much pigment in one swipe that you really have to be careful not to overdo it. I found that these were actually pretty sheer on contact.

THE REALITY

Here's how I would describe them based on my experience:

Sheer but BUILDABLE coverage
Long wearing
A ton of product
Luxe packaging

So, let's start over. I'm going to put what I have heard about the blush aside and focus on what I noticed when using it.

COVERAGE: The blush is sheer but you can easily build the intensity to full pan color. It's important to note that you can build the color slowly in thin layers. This prevents that feeling of excess powder on your face. It's actually genius considering the bold nature of this color. You don't have to worry about adding too much. I think that can be the major challenge for people who use NARS blushes. You can easily move into clown territory. So, to have so much control makes you much more confident in your application.

WEAR: I have oily skin and powder blush usually disappears after about two hours. This blush lasted 6-8 hours on my skin. I couldn't believe that I looked in the mirror at the end of the day and I could still see blush on my face!

QUANITY: This blush is 9g. To put that into perspective, that is the size of a MAC beauty powder. It's huge. The R&R pressed powder is the same size. I don't have any blushes this size so it almost warrants the price.

PACKAGING: Now this is a highly debatable point. I really like the packaging. I think it looks and feels very luxe. I can't wait to pull it out of my purse. :) I can also tell that a lot of thought went into the packaging and there is a great attention to detail. You'll see it in the pics below. The compact has a nice weight and has a huge mirror, which I love. Plus, it has a pin hole on the back to depot the blush. But, I couldn't release the blush when I tried so I don't know about that (plus R&R doesn't sell blush pans). A lot of people have an issue with the packaging because they feel it's bulky and difficult to store. I don't. I keep mine (at this point I have 5 - pics/review to come) in their hatboxes stacked on my makeup desk.

So considering everything, if you can get these on sale for 40% or 50% off they are well worth it. I am in love. I would definitely recommend them.

I mentioned in my last post that I was going to be doing an upcoming post on a recent visit to a photoshoot. This isn't that post but more of a sneak peek. I am going to be profiling a local makeup artist named Kat DeJesus. So, I wanted to get some shots of her at work and talk to her about her work and her process. It was really interesting, actually. I also got to chat a bit with the stylist and the photographer. It should be a great post! Here are are few pics from my visit:

Essence 40th Anniversary Issue

A couple of weeks ago, Sam Fine posted a link on Twitter to a video showing the behind the scenes footage of the 40th anniversary cover shoot of Essence magazine. It features Iman, Naomi Campbell and Liya Kebede. Sam was Iman's makeup artist for the shoot.

Three generations of Black beauty. Three of the most successful Black supermodels. I'm awed. When you see the three of them together you can see the power of Black beauty. You also see why they are and were at the top of their profession. Gorgeous!

I always love behind the scenes footage. I am the person that is always curious about the things we don't see. I also love to see artists at work - whether it's the photographer, hair stylist, makeup artist or wardrobe stylist. Speaking of which, look forward to my own BTS post of a shoot I recently attended.

The Makeup Show Chicago will take place on June 12-13 at Venue One, 1044 West Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60607.

I am very excited about this. I just attended The Makeup Show New York for the first time in May of this year and I enjoyed it. I never thought in a million years that it would come to Chicago. I can't wait to go. It will certainly be nice to have it in my backyard as opposed to planning and saving and trekking to NYC.

It will be interesting to see how it compares to the established shows in Los Angeles and New York. I hope that Chicago really turns out to support the show because there is certainly nothing like it in the city. It will also be nice for people living in other Midwest cities to have an event like this close by. I expect to see people from Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis and the like. June 12, 2011 can't come soon enough.

About Face: Christina Aguilera Inspired Tutorial (FAIL)

Lordy Lordy. I had such ambitions for this look. If you watched my latest video, you know that I mentioned I would be doing a Christina Aguilera inspired look. I was inspired by a look from her "Not Myself Tonight" video. Well, it didn't turn out. It was such a pain to do that I haven't felt like trying to recreate it. I pretty much chucked the whole idea.

This happens sometimes. The videos themselves don't turn out. Maybe the look doesn't turn out or translate on camera. I usually scrap the whole thing. But, this time I thought I'd share it with you guys.

So, below is the look I was trying to recreate:

I loved every aspect of this. The bang and long ponytail. The glitter on her red lip. The contour on her cheek. The pink blush. The long "spike" (for lack of a better word) coming from her lash.

Well, here is how my version turned out.

You can see why it was a FAIL. I decided to do the bang a little differently. I liked it initially. It was my own little spin on the look but I didn't like it on camera. The same for the "spikes". They look SO dramatic on camera. They dominate the look instead of just accenting the lash. And finally, the blush is off. The lip is o...k....but again, I just didn't feel like it lived up to the original at all. Oh, and the brows are all wrong.

It's so hard when you do an inspired look because there is always that pressure to get it just right. I know that I want to stay as true as I can to the look I am trying to recreate. But, sometimes you miss the mark. What can you do? :)

Necole Bitchie's Interview With Celebrity Make Up Artist AJ Crimson

AJ Crimson is amazing! I first learned of him through his work with Amerie. Whenever I would see her in a magazine, in one of her videos or during a performance I would always wonder, "who did her makeup?"

AJ recently spoke with Necole Bitchie about his work, how he got started and working with some of his celebrity clientele.

Necole Bitchie and I got our start in radio at Detroit’s FM 98 WJLB, and so did you! How did you go from a producer at WJLB to a Celebrity Make-Up artist?

Great question! I loved my position at Detroit’s FM 98 WJLB radio station. I thought I would grow in that section of the industry, but through working on the broadcast side of music I found a very deep interest in the inner workings of the music industry. Eventually I was able to turn that into an opportunity to work with Michael Bivins label (Biv 10 Records), before deciding to step into the behind the scenes development of artists, in terms of wardrobe styling, and then makeup. But, it wasn’t until I spent time working on the movie “8 Mile” (starring Eminem) that I decided to take the show on the road and my career to the next level by moving to Los Angeles. That is where I chose to pursue makeup full time. I moved to Los Angeles with only one bag of clothes, a makeup kit that I built, and $400.00! It made the transition easier since I could get on a bus with the makeup kit! (Laughs)

How did you gain such a long list of celebrity clientele?

Word of mouth! Telling everyone I met who I wanted to work with! Working on lots of free jobs! Flying myself where the clients are! Fergie was my first! We meet on a fashion show for Will I Am’s line and became friends. Later she joined the group and I was on set keying (leading the makeup direction) of my first video! Christina Milian was second client. I was referred to her by a director that knew her agent. Keyshia Cole was next! Her hairstylist and fashion stylist at the time brought me in and told her about me. I hit it off with all my clients the first day and stayed with them exclusively for many years. The same still stands today. It’s about great personality, commitment to doing quality work! Opening yourself up for the possibilities! Making your clients look and feel great. Maintaining great relationships. No one wants to work with Divas! That attitude is not acceptable from anyone including the artist. I won’t work with or refer anyone that behaves that way. It’s not worth it no matter how great your craft is.

What are some of the recent projects with celebrities that you have worked on?

I did the Brandy photo shoot with 106g. (Brandy in some hot looks by the by a pool) It’s been all over your blog, I love that shoot by the way! Any summer make up tips for a Bitchie Chick on the go?

Absolutely! I’m all about my signature Crimson Five Minute Face! All of my girls do it! On clean skin, take a bit of your favorite moisturizer in the palm of your hand, add your liquid or cream foundation, add a bit of liquid shimmer and mix it all together! Then apply to the skin just as you would your normal moisturizer! The result is fresh flawless and WEIGHTLESS skin! You can leave it dewy or touch up with a bit of pressed or loose powder only where needed so it doesn’t look oily or too matte! Then, top the look off with eyeliner, mascara and a fun lip color!Sounds like a lot of steps but when you try it you’ll see firsthand how easy it is – you’ll have it mastered and done in five minutes or less before you know it!

The Makeup Show Week - Out & About in NYC

This is my next to last installment of The Makeup Show Week. I fell off my posting schedule. Sorry. The next post will be my haul and I think I'll do a video for that so stay tuned. Anyway, let's get to it.

SATURDAY

This was my first trip to NYC. I was excited, nervous, curious, anxious and a bunch of other emotions. I arrived in NYC on Saturday, May 15. My flight was supposed to come into JFK. I had already figured out how to get to my hotel and everything. Well, it was diverted to LaGuardia instead.

When I landed there was supposed to be a shuttle to JFK but there was SO much confusion about it that I decided to pay for another shuttle to The Port Authority in Manhattan. After stopping at Penn Station I was the only person left on the shuttle. On our way to The Port Authority we got stuck in traffic on 42nd street so the driver let me out in the middle of the street, right around 6th ave. So crazy! LOL. Anyway, there was a little street festival going on so I decided to check it out.

There were booths selling jewelry, scarves, food, music, and several other things. I was hungry and since I was headed to my hotel and then to Erin's event it meant that I probably wouldn't get a chance to grab anything to eat until much later. So, I picked up a gyro at one of the stands, an $8 gyro. Now I know a gyro should not cost $8 but it was a street fair in NYC so I figured that was about par.

I left the street fair and made my way over to Times Square to walk around a bit. I popped into Sephora, Walgreens, and a few other places. Up to this point NYC looked like any big city but Times Square blew my mind. There is nothing like it. It's surreal and massive and unbelievable. Between the sea of people and the larger than life billboards, you feel like you're in some weird alternate reality. LOL. I didn't actually make it to The Port Authority. I saw another train station entrance in Times Square so I decided to just catch the train there. After taking the wrong train (thanks MTA map), I finally made it to my hotel. I ate my gyro, relaxed for a minute and then changed and headed out to Erin's Fly Beauty Lounge event.

SUNDAY

Sunday was the first day of the show and, to be honest, when I left I was beat. I went back to my hotel and took a shower. I was going to go for a drink at A60, the rooftop bar at 60 Thompson hotel. But, I didn't hear back from the person I was supposed to go with. It was a blessing really because I was secretly wishing she wouldn't call. I just wanted to chill and get ready for the show the next day. But, next time I'm in the city I WILL be going.

MONDAY

Life is funny in the sense that nothing ever works out as you plan. Then they are things that come along that you didn't expect and they are absolute delights. That is the best way to describe Monday. The day started off rough. I didn't sleep well. I woke up with a headache. My legs and feet were sore. I missed the ONE seminar that I came to the show to see. Plus, it looked like the show would be half over by the time I got there. I needed coffee and I needed to take a moment to pull myself together. I decided to head to Limelight Marketplace, a new indoor market not far from the show. I saw it when I was researching places to eat near the show. It's such a cute spot.

The building used to be a church, then it was a nightclub for a number of years and now it's a market. There are three floors of small shops which sell cosmetics, accessories, bath & body, gourmet foods, clothings, perfumes, and much more. I stopped in and picked up gelato & espresso and walked around a bit. I really enjoyed myself. It wasn't crowed so I could freely and comfortably browse. I would defintely recommend it if you're in Chelsea with a little time to kill.

I finally made it to the show. I walked around a bit then headed to the event at the Makeup Forever store before coming back to close out the show. I met up with Erin, Amina, and Brittany, fellow beauty bloggers. They were headed to Brooklyn to check out a new store selling bath and body products and I asked if I could tag along. I didn't have any plans and I wanted to get out and do something. Plus, I wanted to see more of the city and spend time with some other bloggers. I hadn't gotten a chance to really see anyone and by Monday most people had left or were leaving.

We took a series of trains and ended up in Brooklyn at Karen's Body Beautiful. I wasn't familiar with the company but it's a Black owned business that started off online before expanding to an actual storefront. The space is a beautiful and it's not even finished. Aside from the retail area in the front of the store there will be spa services offered in the back. According to Karen, the owner, everything should be up and running within the next couple months. On top of that, they are also in the process of repackaging their products. I got a sneak peek and was very impressed. The new packaging is very sleek, very modern and really ties into the chic and modern look of the store. You can tell that a lot of thought was put into every detail of the design for the space and the packaging.

Once we left the shop we headed back to Manhattan to meet up with a friend of Brittany's for dinner. We walked around a bit and ended up on Restaurant Row at Yum Yum 3, a quaint thai restaurant. The food was good, the conversation was great and we ended up closing up restaurant. It was about 12:00AM at that point. We all walked back to Times Square where we split off so that everyone could head back to their respective homes/hotels. GREAT NIGHT!

TUESDAY

Ahhhh....Tuesday. I deliberately planned my trip so that I would have Tuesday to walk around the city and explore. I knew the show would occupy most of my time and I wanted a day to walk around and soak in NYC. My flight didn't leave until 8:40PM so I planned to get out and make the most of my last day. Well, mother nature had something else in mind. It rained. And by rained I mean it poured. All Day. Not only did it rain, but the temperature dropped about 20 degrees. I hadn't packed for cooler weather and I didn't have an umbrella. My life. I seriously debated what I should do. I didn't want to spend all day in the hotel lobby but I didn't want to be out in the cold rain either. In the end, I decided to layer the clothing I did bring and borrow an umbrella from the hotel. I left my bags at front desk and headed out to try to see SOMETHING on my last day.

When I attended the Makeup Forever event I left a bag behind at the store so I stopped by to pick that up. When I arrived KJ Bennett was there working with the artists. I introduced myself, which was funny because he thought we met before which we really hadn't. I did attend a blogger preview at The Artist Summit last year and he spoke to the group of us but that was about it.

From there I decided to check out the MAC Pro store. I have seen it so many times in pictures and people have said that it's amazing. I was told that it would be hard to find and truer words have never been spoken. I spent 20 minutes in the rain walking around trying to find this store. When I finally made it up to the store I was VERY underwhelmed. It was empty, dark and looks much better in pictures. From there I decided to head further uptown to Inglot.

Naturally, with my luck being what it is, when I arrived at Inglot it was closed for construction. I couldn't believe it. It was the one store I really wanted to see in person. They were at the show with some of the products but I wanted to see the entire product line. Oh well. Maybe next time.

My father wanted some NYC souvenirs so I walked into one of the shops that I saw. The stuff was okay but nothing I would purchase and certainly not at those price points.

I walked around Times Square a bit and then hopped on the train and headed back to grab something to eat and walk around SoHo. I stopped by Mooncake Foods, another restaurant on my list, and had a chicken stew which was a pretty good dish for the cold, wet weather.

Next, I was off to check out SoHo. There were so many cute restaurants, galleries, clothing stores, etc. If the weather had been nicer I would have really enjoyed walking around and checking it all out. But, after about an hour I was tired, soaking wet and I needed to start heading to the airport. I stopped by the hotel to pick up my luggage and then I was off to JFK.

I cut my time really close. The airlines suggest that you arrive two hours before your flight but I got there about an hour and fifteen minutes before my flight. Thankfully, security was a breeze and I was at the terminal in no time.

I was really impressed. The terminal was beautiful. It looked kind of like a mall, actually. Very cute restaurants and bars. Small shops and thankfully they had WiFi! I wanted to walk around a bit but I was so uncomfortable because my pants, shoes and socks were so wet that I stayed put. I did make it over to Jamba Juice and by the time I got to the gate everyone had boarded! I couldn't believe it. I think I was the last to board. We waited about an hour on the runway before we could take off but once we were in the air it was a nice flight.

It was midnight by the time I got home....and I was so happy to be there. NYC was good but be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. :) I am definitely going back, though. There was so much that I missed. I'm going to keep my eye out for one of those last minute weekend deals. Perhaps I'll make it there again later this year.

The Makeup Show Week - MUFE Event

MAKEUP FOREVER EVENT

So, if you have been reading my posts thus far you know that Monday was a rough morning for me. But, I pulled it together and it ended up being the best day of my entire trip to NYC. Let me give you a little backstory (I love backstory - LOL). I was leaving the show on Sunday. I decided to stop by Duane Read to pick up a few things and then hop back on the train to my hotel. Well, who do I see as I'm making my way to the intersection???? DANY SANZ! For those who don't know, and I can't imagine that could be many of you, Dany Sanz is the creator of the cosmetic line Makeup Forever.

I saw that Dany was at the show doing a workshop but I couldn't afford to attend it so I passed. I also saw her walking around the show on Sunday but was too intimidated to walk up and say hello. As it was, she was standing at the crosswalk waiting to cross the street and I couldn't decide whether to walk up and say anything. But, I kept thinking A) What are the odds that I'd run into her? B) Suck it up and seize the opportunity. She was speaking to someone so I waited for a pause in the conversation and tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around and I introduced myself and told her that I just wanted to meet her and that I loved the brand. Well, as luck would have it, she was with a group of people one of which turned out to be a PR rep. She walked over, introduced herself and asked if I attended the blogger preview for the show. I explained that I'd missed it. Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather for this next part. She shared that there would to be a another, much smaller blogger event at the Makeup Forever store and that Dany would be there. I gave her my card, as well as everyone in the party, and she told me she'd email the details. Say whaaaa???? I was so excited. So, that's your backstory. Onto the story story.

So, Monday morning I get my invitation to the event and see that it's at 4:00PM. Well, like I said in my Day 2 post, I didn't get to the show until it was half over, which was around 2:00PM. That gave me less than two hours to see the show and then head over to the MUFE store for the event. Me being me, I cut my time so close that I was walking out of the pavilion on my way to the store at about 3:50PM. I knew the store was several blocks away so I power walked there. I arrived huffing and puffing, with shin muscles so tight they felt like they'd snap. But, I was there!

I ran into Felicia from This That Beauty, who I had been trying to catch up with all weekend. We chatted for a sec and then it was time for the event to begin. We were all there for the release of Makeup Forever's latest innovation - Aqua Cream. I had heard raves about it from other bloggers but this was my chance to hear about it from the source.

Dany walked in, took a seat and got right to it. Aqua creams have been a couple of years in the making. This was a particularly difficult product to produce because A) It's created with volatile, or evaporating, oils which....well...evaporate. B) The product had to be created with ingredients that are sure to be safe for the skin. C) The materials used to create it are expensive but it had to be available at a reasonable price point. D) There is a level of quality and excellence that is expected of Makeup Forever so the product had to live up to that and do what it says it does.

Here are a few other things that Dany shared with us:

She, herself, worked with 4 different chemists to perfect this formula.
Aqua creams came about at the request of her friends in the industry. They wanted a product that was TRULY waterproof. There are a lot of products that are water RESISTANT but none that truly had the stabilty to withstand water completely.
The formulation, the result you get from a product, is the most important thing to her. Although, most people assume she's focused more on the creativity of a product.
She loves extremes. She's very proud that professionals and the average consumer alike enjoy and use her products.
The product was tested for a year in the water by aquatic ballerinas.

I got a chance to swatch one of the creams. It is very smooth. The color I chose was #14. I can't wait to play with more of these. Here is a little more about the creams:

Expect about 10-12 hours of wear.

There are 21 shades - 15 for the eyes & cheeks, 6 for the lips and cheeks.
Expect the colors for the lips to be a little drying as these they are very long lasting are not specifically formulated as a lip product.
The shades easily layer with each other and other products because they completely dry down. So, try them as a base for your eyeshadow, blush or lip color.

I had an amazing time! How often do you get to sit down and listen to the creator of a brand discuss their latest product and give you the history of its invention???? Dany is really interesting and has a good sense of humor. I don't know if it was that French accent or what but I could have listened to her speak all afternoon. LOL. FLY BEAUTY LOUNGE EVENT

Beauty Blogger Erin, from Scandalous Beauty, held a networking event for makeup artists, bloggers, photographers, and anyone in the beauty industry. The event took place on Saturday, May 15, the day before the Makeup Show began. It was held at Taj II lounge in Chelsea and was co-hosted by makeup artist Warren Beautiful. They hosted the first Fly Beauty Lounge a few months ago in DC and it was such a success they decided to host another. If I'm not mistaken, Erin and Warren are planning to host Fly Beauty Lounges throughout the country.

I rolled in around 8:30 ish. The event began at 7:30PM and ran until 9:30PM. There was a pretty good turnout but I expected it to be PACKED based on all the people who RSVP'd, which was done through Facebook. But, like I said, I was an hour late so I don't know who arrived earlier in the evening.

I saw tons of beauty bloggers who were in town for The Makeup Show. This was my first night in NYC so it was great to see so many familiar faces.

I didn't get a chance to see a lot of Erin because she was hosting the event. She was mingling, and doing interviews for most of the night. Ivette, B.Rose, and I cut out around 10:30PM in search of something to eat. We ended up at McDonald's for a cheap, quick late night snack and then I headed back to my hotel to get set for The Makeup Show the next day.
